What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An optometrist tests your eyes, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and screens for eye disease. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specialises in eye disease and eye surgery, such as cataract surgery, retinal procedures and glaucoma treatment. Most people see an optometrist first and are referred to an ophthalmologist when a problem needs a specialist.

When should I ask my optometrist for a referral to an eye surgeon?

Ask about a referral if your optometrist finds cataracts that affect your daily life, signs of diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, raised eye pressure, or any sudden change such as flashes, new floaters, a shadow in your vision or distorted straight lines. Sudden loss of vision is an emergency: go to the nearest emergency department or phone an ophthalmologist the same day.
