Can Cataracts Be Prevented or Delayed?

Cataracts are largely age-related and cannot be completely prevented. However, research shows that certain lifestyle habits may help reduce the risk or slow their progression.

Wearing sunglasses that block UV light protects the eyes from sun damage. A diet rich in antioxidants β€” especially leafy greens, citrus fruits, and colourful vegetables β€” supports lens health. Controlling chronic conditions such as diabetes is also important, since high blood sugar speeds up cataract development.

Avoiding smoking and reducing alcohol intake have also been linked to a lower risk. While these steps don’t guarantee that cataracts won’t develop, they support overall eye health and may delay the need for surgery.
