Can Cataracts Come Back After Surgery?
One of the most common questions patients ask is whether a cataract can return after it has been removed. The short answer is no — once the natural cloudy lens has been taken out, it cannot come back. However, some people do develop a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO), sometimes called a “secondary cataract.”
During surgery, the cataract is removed but the clear capsule that holds the lens is left in place to support the artificial lens implant. Over time, this capsule can become cloudy. If that happens, vision may become blurred again, similar to how it felt with a cataract.
The good news is that this is easily treated. A simple outpatient laser procedure, called YAG laser capsulotomy, quickly clears the cloudy capsule and restores vision. The procedure is painless, takes only a few minutes, and the improvement is usually immediate.
So while the cataract itself cannot return, some patients may need this quick laser treatment months or years after their original surgery.
